Jobseekers checking on employers to gain an edge

We have all heard about employers checking on their employees extracurricular activities on Facebook and the like, but what about job seekers checking on employers to gain an edge? Yes, once again it is a trend that started in the US with a website by the name of Beenverified.com, announcing ‘a service that provides jobseekers with a secret weapon for landing a job’. By tapping into popular online services, such as Twitter and LinkedIn, and combining them with traditional background checking, candidates gain unprecedented access into the minds of their interviewers. Job Seekers can then use this information to help guide their conversations during an interview, as, apparently, employers favour candidates who share a similar point of view.

According to Career Builder, 77% of recruiters will use search engines to research potential employees during the hiring process. An additional 51% will perform an in-depth background check as well. Consequently, the interviewer has most likely done some digging into a job-seekers past, which creates an obvious disadvantage - this person knows almost everything about a candidate, while the candidate knows very little about the interviewer.

How it works

Imagine walking into an interview armed with knowledge about an interviewer that none of the other candidates would ever have been able to find out. BeenVerified taps into popular services such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and over 40 other social networks to see exactly who the interviewer is as a person. Knowing an interviewer's favourite music, marriage status, favourite books, whether one prefers family time or rowdy football games can help guide answers to questions asked in an interview.

For example, when an interviewer asks 'What do you like to do for fun on the weekends?' A job-seeker can respond with the correct answer whether it be 'quiet, reading time with the family' or 'singing on the terraces at the football game with your mates'. In this job market, having the right answer is what can separate a job-seeker from every other candidate out there.
